Bulk Sampling & Testing

20+ Years' Experience | BOHS Qualified | SafeContractor Approved | UKAS Laboratory Analysis | Independent Technical Advice

Asbestos bulk sampling is the process of taking small samples of building materials that are suspected to contain asbestos. The samples are carefully collected by a trained surveyor, sealed in labelled containers, and sent to a UKAS-accredited laboratory for analysis.

This type of service is often used when:

- Only a specific material (e.g. floor tile, textured coating, insulation board) needs to be tested.

- A full asbestos survey is not required.

- A client simply needs to confirm whether a material does, or does not, contain asbestos.

How does bulk sampling work?

1. Site Visit – A qualified surveyor attends the property in full PPE.

2. Sample Collection – A small section of the suspect material is carefully removed, with minimal disturbance, and placed into a secure container.

3. Lab Analysis – The sample is tested at a UKAS-accredited laboratory using polarised light microscopy (PLM) to determine if asbestos fibres are present.

4. Results & Report – You receive a formal certificate/report stating whether asbestos was identified, the type of asbestos fibre, and recommendations for management or removal if required.

Important Notes

Bulk sampling is material-specific – it does not provide a complete picture of asbestos risks across a building.

If wider asbestos risks are suspected, a management, refurbishment, or demolition survey may be required.

Sampling should only be carried out by trained professionals — disturbing asbestos without proper precautions can be dangerous.

Alongside bulk sampling, our team conducts Management Surveys, Refurbishment & Demolition Surveys, and Air Monitoring across the UK.

Related Asbestos Services

Asbestos Management Surveys:

An asbestos management survey is designed to locate, as far as reasonably practicable, the presence and extent of asbestos-containing materials within occupied buildings. The survey helps dutyholders comply with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 by providing an asbestos register and information required to safely manage asbestos during normal occupation and routine maintenance.

Refurbishment Asbestos Surveys:

If refurbishment or alteration works are planned, a refurbishment asbestos survey should be completed before work begins. These intrusive surveys identify asbestos-containing materials likely to be disturbed during the proposed works, helping protect contractors and ensuring compliance with current legislation.

Demolition Asbestos Surveys:

A demolition asbestos survey is required before a building, or part of a building, is demolished. These fully intrusive surveys are designed to identify all asbestos-containing materials, as far as reasonably practicable, enabling their safe removal before demolition commences.

Asbestos Re-Inspection Surveys:

Known or presumed asbestos-containing materials should be periodically inspected to confirm they remain in a satisfactory condition. Our asbestos re-inspection surveys update your asbestos register and help ensure asbestos continues to be managed safely.

Asbestos Management Plans:

An asbestos management plan provides the practical arrangements required to manage asbestos safely within non-domestic premises. It supports dutyholders in meeting their legal responsibilities by detailing inspection frequencies, communication procedures and emergency arrangements.

Following asbestos removal works, waste should be transported and disposed of in accordance with current hazardous waste legislation. We provide compliant asbestos waste collection and disposal services for domestic, commercial and industrial clients throughout the UK.

Non-Licensed Asbestos Removal:

Certain lower-risk asbestos-containing materials can be removed without the need for a licensed asbestos contractor, provided the work falls within the scope of non-licensed or notifiable non-licensed work. We undertake selected non-licensed asbestos removal works in accordance with current legislation and industry guidance.
